Leanne Ooms – Meet Your Rep

What is your name and your role on the executive?

My name is Leanne Ooms, and I am the Grievance Chair for CUPE, Local 1975. I represent all of our CUPE members, also members of USSU.

Can you give a brief description of your background?

I am currently employed by the U of S and work in and support Facilities Management. I also support Safety Resources. I have been employed by the U of S since December 2014. I was elected as a Clerical Rep in the fall of 2015. In May of 2018, I assumed the role of Grievance Chair, where I have been re-elected for two terms.

Why did you choose to become a union representative on the CUPE 1975 executive?

Starting in the workforce when I was younger and in a union environment, I was never aware of the rights union workers had. I wanted to learn how a union can help the members and then be that person to support the members when their rights have been violated.

Can you give some personal details (e.g. hobbies)?

I enjoy all types of activities/hobbies of making decorative items by hand, from small creations to larger woodworking. If there is something I want to create, I will most definitely try. In the summer months, I enjoy spending time at the lake and catching some sun on the boat with family and friends.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

Ever since I was 15, entering the workforce. I have dabbled in many different career options, such as: Heavy-duty mechanics, auto mechanics, professional detailing, application of 3M, stone chip prevention (vehicles), Paralegal (Real Estate, Corporate, Wills & Estates, Immigration), Sous Chef/mass production of packaged foods, and mastering the ice cream curl at Dairy Queen 😉
